What to Do When the Garbage Disposal Breaks
DIY Fix to Garbage Disposal Problems
Garbage disposals are a wonderful thing for our kitchens since they allow us to prevent chunks of food or debris from clogging our sink and pipes. No matter how convenient garbage disposals may be, there are times when they may stop working.
If your garbage disposal has stopped working, here are some tips you can follow to get it back up and running:
- Turn off the garbage disposal. Even if the device is not crushing food, you do not want to have your hand or another device in the machine when it starts working. Immediately turn off the switch while you determine what is wrong.
- Check to see if too much has been put in the device. Many garbage disposals have a sensor that will trigger it to shut off if too much has been placed inside or if the device is overheating. Check to see if too much food product has been placed in the machine and take steps to clear it out. If not, there may be an electrical problem with the device.
- Determine if the machine is plugged in. If not, plug the machine into the outlet and take the necessary steps to reset it. Turn on the machine and see if it starts up again.
- Examine if the machine is jammed. Sometimes things can clog the drain and prevent the machine from working. In order to fix this, get an Allen wrench or a hex key. Put it through the hold located at the bottom of the disposal in the sink and once the tool locks in, turn the chamber of the disposal. This should allow you to remove whatever is jamming the device.
