• Don’t flush anything but toilet paper down the toilet. It’s not wise to flush baby wipes, hair, tissues, cotton balls, feminine hygiene products, paper towels, cat litter, medications, or dirty mop water. They can lead to stubborn clogs, and you don’t want that headache.
• Make sure that everyone in your home knows where all the shutoff valves are located. If you don’t know where they are, have a plumber show you and then label each one.
• At least once a year, double-check to ensure that the main water shutoff valve to the home is working.
• If your home uses a septic system, have it inspected regularly by a licensed plumber.
• Don’t put grease down any drains. Instead, put it in a glass jar and dispose of it in the trash.
• Keep in mind that chemical drain cleaners are dangerous and extremely toxic. If you want to use drain cleaner, you may want to think twice, especially if you have a stubborn clog. It’s safer to call a plumber, who won’t use a toxic cleaner that could endanger your health.
• Don’t try to grind up coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta, potato or carrot peels, uncooked rice, or large chunks of food in the garbage disposal. Always run cold water into the garbage disposal when you run it.
• Be sure to check the temperature on your water heater occasionally. Typically, units should be set at 120 to 140 degrees. By running the water heater at a lower temperature, you’ll save money and you’ll extend the life of your water heater.
